THE STORY
“Not the instrument itself, but what it was built to find.”
Qiblah is about the meeting of faith and scientific inquiry in Muslim history. The astrolabe at the centre of the painting points to the care Muslim scholars gave to finding prayer times and the direction of the Kaabah. Its intricate form represents a precise search, repeated every day, by people orienting themselves towards prayer.
This painting is a tribute to that tradition of scholarship. It holds devotion and discovery in the same space, and remembers the intellectual legacy of the Muslim world.
Material & Process
This is acrylic on canvas. The background is painted in deep teal, forest green and midnight blue, blended and broken so the colour shifts across the canvas. The intricate surface of the astrolabe is built up in gold paint using a fine nozzle, writing La Ilaha Illallah in stylised calligraphy, stroke by stroke. The curves and circles of the astrolabe face are then layered in bright gold, built up again and again to give the impression of sculpted metalwork. The raised surface catches the light as you move around the painting.
