THE STORY
“Writing La Ilaha Illallah thousands of times became my own tasbih.”
Essence of Faith centres on La Ilaha Illallah, there is no god but God. At the centre is the Kaabah, with thousands of handwritten repetitions of the phrase moving around it in circles, as pilgrims circle the Kaabah.
I wrote each one in gold Posca paint pen against layers of green and brown. As I worked, I would lose track of time. The repetition became my own tasbih.
Material & Process
This is acrylic on canvas with gold Posca paint pen. The surface is built through thousands of individual handwritten marks, so the gold writing catches the light differently as you move around the painting.
