Surah Ar-Rahman is the surah I turn to when everything feels too loud. There is something about the rhythm of it, the way Fa-bi-ayyi ala-i Rabbikuma tukadhdhibaan repeats like a heartbeat, that just brings you back to yourself.
In this painting, the Surah sits at the centre, and surrounding it, written thousands of times in my own hand, is the Shahadah. La Ilaha Ilallah. It took a very long time. But that repetition was the point. Each time I wrote it, it felt like dhikr. Like the act of making the painting was itself a form of worship.
I wanted the person who lives with this piece to feel that same stillness. To look at it on a difficult day and remember what they know to be true.
