Abstract Domes

Abstract Domes

100 × 120 cm Acrylic on canvas

This painting is made entirely from old postage stamps, gathered from countries all over the world. Each one depicts the pilgrimage to Makkah, and each one looks completely different. The same Kaabah, the same circling crowds, the same act of devotion, seen through the eyes of Nigeria, Indonesia, Pakistan, Turkey, Iran, Malaysia. Every culture bringing its own colour, its own visual language, its own story.

What moved me as I worked with them was realising how much geography is contained in this single act of faith. Millions of people, from every corner of the earth, all turning toward the same point. The stamps became a kind of map of that. A mosaic of the Muslim world, in all its extraordinary variety, united by something that transcends all of it.

That is the journey this painting is about. Not just the pilgrimage to Makkah, but the journey of a global community finding itself in the same place, at the same time, for the same reason.

Abstract Domes is held in a private collection.

Layer upon layer, dome upon dome. Abstract Domes holds the ancient and the brilliant new in the same breath, each translucent form a reminder that the spirit of Islamic heritage does not fade
