THE STORY
“Many journeys, one sacred centre.”
Journey Around the Kaabah I is about tawaf, the movement of pilgrims around the Kaabah. The painting brings together hundreds of coloured lines, each carrying its own direction and rhythm. They circle the black cube at the centre, where the movement becomes focused and calm.
The Kaabah remains still while everything around it moves. I wanted to hold that contrast: the individuality of each journey and the unity of people gathering around the same place.
Material & Process
This is acrylic on canvas. I created the loose circular movements through the movement of my wrist, standing a little away from the canvas so the lines could stay fluid rather than becoming tight. I built the circles in layers of colour around the Kaabah, allowing the movement to gather and travel across the surface.
