THE STORY

“A direction held by faith and precision.”

Compass of Faith considers the early astrolabes Muslim scholars developed to locate the direction of the Kaabah and calculate prayer times. At the centre, the instrument points towards the Kaabah, giving the painting its sense of purpose and direction.

These instruments were a meeting point of faith and scientific inquiry. They supported everyday worship while reflecting the care, curiosity and intellectual legacy of the Muslim world.

Material & Process

This is acrylic on canvas. I built the compass layer by layer with thick acrylic paint, using precise lines and circles to create its structure. The raised paint gives the work a tactile surface, allowing the compass form and its fine detail to stand out against the black ground.
