THE STORY

“A place of absolute peace.”

Darwaza is a portrayal of the motif that adorns a door of Masjid an-Nabawi in Madinah. I wanted to focus on this small but distinctive detail, which carries the richness and spiritual significance of the mosque’s design.

For me, the painting is about the feeling of arrival. It is an invitation to pause and contemplate a place where faith, history and daily prayer meet.

Material & Process

This is acrylic on canvas. I began with a velvety black ground. Thick layers of paint are then built up to sculpt the door motif in relief, bringing its intricate design forward from the surface. The raised paint gives the work a tactile quality that changes with the light.
