The Craft
"Built up again and again to give the impression of sculpted metalwork"
I painted this using thick acrylic paint straight out of the tube. The background is painted in deep teal, forest green and midnight blue, blended and broken so the colour shifts across the canvas. The intricate surface of the astrolabe is built up in gold paint using a fine nozzle, writing La Ilaha Ilallah in my own stylised calligraphy. The curves and circles of the astrolabe face are then layered in bright gold, built up again and again to give the impression of sculpted metalwork. The raised surface catches the light the way real gold does.
The Background

The Calligraphy
Using gold paint with a fine nozzle, I wrote La Ilaha Ilallah in my own stylised calligraphy, stroke by stroke.

Five times a day, Muslims across the world face the same direction. For centuries, scholars and navigators built instruments like this to find it: the qiblah, the direction of the Kaabah. This painting is not about the instrument. It is about what the instrument was built to find.

Your print is made to last. A few things worth knowing:
Keep it out of direct sunlight where possible. Archival paper holds its colour well, but prolonged UV exposure will fade any print over time.
Avoid hanging in humid rooms such as bathrooms or kitchens. Moisture is the main enemy of fine art paper.
If your print arrives rolled, lay it flat under a few books for 24 hours before framing. It will settle naturally.
For cleaning, a soft dry cloth on the glass is all you need. Never spray directly onto the print.
