The Craft
"Every square was either a letter or a silence between letters. The geometry had to be exact before a single mark of gold went down."
I mapped the canvas out in a grid of small squares before any paint was applied. Each square was designated either for part of a letter, built up with thick layers of texture, or as the spaces between letters, left flat. I laid the dark background down first, then applied gold paint over the raised squares to lift the texture and bring the script forward. The letters are crisp and angular, the geometry precise. The verse travels from the bottom right corner inward, spiralling toward the centre.
The Letter
Every square was mapped out before any paint went down. Each one was either part of a letter, built up with layers of texture, or the silence between letters, left flat. The geometry had to be exact before anything else could happen.
The Gold
I laid the dark background down first. Then I applied gold paint over the raised squares. That is when the script appeared, not painted, but lifted. The texture catches the light and the letters come forward out of the dark.
The Spiral
The verse does not run in a straight line. It travels from the bottom right corner inward, spiralling toward the centre. The further in you go, the denser and more luminous the gold becomes.
The Story
"There is no verse more present in a Muslim home than Ayat ul Kursi. It is protection. It is presence. It is the first thing you see and the last thing you leave behind."
Growing up, we always had Ayat ul Kursi near the entrance of the house. It was one of the first things you saw when you walked in and one of the last things you saw when you left. I was taught from a young age that it was a verse of protection, that reciting it kept you safe, that having it in your home brought barakah into the space.
I have always been drawn to Kufic calligraphy. There is something about the geometry of it, the way the letters lock together into a grid, that feels both ancient and completely contemporary at the same time. I wanted to create a version of Ayat ul Kursi in that style,

Your print is made to last. A few things worth knowing:
Keep it out of direct sunlight where possible. Archival paper holds its colour well, but prolonged UV exposure will fade any print over time.
Avoid hanging in humid rooms such as bathrooms or kitchens. Moisture is the main enemy of fine art paper.
If your print arrives rolled, lay it flat under a few books for 24 hours before framing. It will settle naturally.
For cleaning, a soft dry cloth on the glass is all you need. Never spray directly onto the print.
