About Sabr

Following the March 2017 attack on Westminster Bridge, I painted this as an expression of faith and patience. The canvas shows a skyline where traditional Islamic architecture blends with the silhouette of Big Ben, existing together under the same sky. Above the city, a burst of light breaks through the deep blue, a reminder of the Qur'anic promise that God is with the patient. This painting honours the resilience of Muslims who face unjustified blame for violence they condemn, choosing instead to practise Sabr.

The Craft

Indeed, Allah is with the patient.
Surah Al-Baqarah 2:153

I used acrylic paint to build up this canvas in layers of deep, resonant blues and vibrant, warm golds. I constructed the Islamic architecture in semi solid, blocks of colour, while Big Ben is rendered in delicate, intricate lines, almost like it is emerging from the landscape. The sky is dominated by a large golden sphere and a brilliant burst of light, giving the piece a cosmic, spiritual atmosphere. In the lower section, I wrote sweeping Arabic calligraphy in thick, raised gold paint, its texture catching the light and standing out from the surface

The Architecture The Architecture I built the Islamic architecture in semi-solid blocks of colour, the gold and teal pressing against each other. The arch at the base is small but it holds the whole structure.
The Sphere The Sphere The large golden sphere dominates the sky. I built it up in layers, working the paint outward from the centre. The dots of colour around the edge came last, catching the light differently from every angle.
The Calligraphy The Calligraphy I wrote the Arabic calligraphy in thick, raised gold paint. The texture stands out from the surface and catches the light. These are not flat marks. You can feel them.

The Story

"Sabr is not giving up. It is choosing faith over fear."

After the Westminster Bridge attack in March 2017, I wanted to paint. Not in response to the violence, but in response to what came after it. The blame, the suspicion, the weight that fell on ordinary Muslims who had nothing to do with it. I wanted to paint something that held both worlds: the city I live in and the faith I carry. Islamic architecture and Big Ben under the same sky, not in conflict, but together.

Seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient. Surah Al-Baqarah 2:153. Sabr is not giving up. It is choosing faith over fear. This painting is for every Muslim who has had to practise that in public, quietly, without recognition.
