The Craft

"Thousands of stamps, each one already travelled, arranged in circles. Performing tawaf."

I used thousands of used postage stamps, most bought and some donated, laying them down and gluing them onto the canvas in overlapping layers. I arranged them in concentric circles so that they appear to be in circumambulation around the Kaabah at the centre. The Kaabah itself is represented by darker stamps at the heart of the piece.

The Kaabah The Kaabah Darker stamps at the heart of the piece mark the Kaabah. Everything in the painting moves toward this point.
The Layers The Layers Each stamp was laid down and glued by hand, overlapping in rings. Up close you can read the countries, the faces, the languages. Every one a different story.
The Tawaf The Tawaf The outer rings of the spiral. Stamps from every continent, arranged in circumambulation. The diversity of the ummah, moving as one.

The Story

"The diversity of the stamps is the diversity of the people."

Every stamp has already travelled. It has been handled, sent, received. It carries something of where it came from. A country, a language, a face, a moment in time.

I chose stamps because the ummah is made up of people with stories, origins and journeys. They come from every corner of the earth, speaking different languages, carrying different histories. And yet they all turn in the same direction.

The diversity of the stamps is the diversity of the people. Arranged in circles around the Kaabah, they are performing tawaf. Everything converges on one point. Everything always has.
