About Sumud
Sumud means steadfastness and rootedness. In Palestinian culture it is not just a word but a way of life. It is a refusal to be moved. This painting shows an olive tree growing from the keffiyeh, its roots deep and its branches breaking through barbed wire. Behind it, the Dome of the Rock stands in gold.
Behind the Painting
I painted this during the current incursion on Gaza. The proceeds from this painting go to Gaza. I was inspired by the concept of sumud itself, by the fact that Palestinians have held on through everything and continue to hold on. Painting this was my way of supporting that resistance. Not just raising funds, but bearing witness to something that refuses to be erased.
How It Was Made
This is acrylic on canvas. The keffiyeh at the base is painted in careful, repeating patterns in black, white and green. Above it the work becomes loose and free, painted with both brush and palette knife. The barbed wire is scratched directly onto the canvas in sharp black lines. The olive tree is built up in thick strokes, the leaves in red, green, black and white. The trunk and roots twist in deep reds and blacks. The Dome behind the tree is heavy with gold paint, textured and layered. The sky is pushed across the canvas in blues and whites. A red border frames the whole piece.

Your print is made to last. A few things worth knowing:
Keep it out of direct sunlight where possible. Archival paper holds its colour well, but prolonged UV exposure will fade any print over time.
Avoid hanging in humid rooms such as bathrooms or kitchens. Moisture is the main enemy of fine art paper.
If your print arrives rolled, lay it flat under a few books for 24 hours before framing. It will settle naturally.
For cleaning, a soft dry cloth on the glass is all you need. Never spray directly onto the print.
