Pilgrimage

Threads of Unity

About Threads of Unity

In this painting I mixed soil with acrylic paint to recreate the textures and colours of the earth's terrain. And then I took rich golden thread and stitched it directly into the canvas, by hand.

I remember some parts being so difficult. Where the soil had mixed with gravel, the needle would barely go through. I had to really push. And I found myself thinking, some journeys are like that. Some paths are smooth and some resist you every step of the way. But you keep going.

Each thread is a pilgrim's path. Crossing continents, crossing cultures, all of them converging on the Kaabah at the centre. Different routes, different struggles, the same destination.

Golden threads are sewn across a textured canvas of the earth's terrain, each one a pilgrim's path crossing continents and cultures. They converge at a single point: the Kaabah. A reminder that however far we travel, we are all moving toward the same centre.
