Spiritual Core

About Spiritual Core

This is one of my early paintings and it was where I first started exploring how to show circumambulation. That movement of people circling the Kaabah, this continuous turning that never stops. I kept coming back to that question in so many paintings after this, each time trying a different way to show it.

The brushwork here is looser than what I was doing at the time. The turquoise and blue strokes move in a circular motion, drawing downwards towards the Kaabah which sits lower in the composition. I was trying to get that sense of being pulled in, that gravitational feeling of everything moving towards one point.
