Arches of Revelations
About Arches of Revelation
I have always been fascinated by M.C. Escher. The way he plays with repetition and perspective, the way your eye keeps moving and never quite settles. I wanted to borrow that quality and bring it somewhere spiritual.
The arches in this painting are not meant to be Masjid an-Nabawi as it looks. They are Masjid an-Nabawi as it feels. The lines repeat and fold inward, the way Escher's patterns do, pulling you deeper and deeper until you reach a point somewhere in the centre of the canvas where everything goes quiet.
That is the place I was trying to paint. Not a building. Not even a memory. Just that moment of stillness you sometimes find.
Dimensions: 100×100cm
Highly textured acrylic on canvas
This piece will be exhibited at Escher in the Palace Museum in The Hague from 10th June to 2nd November.
Inspired by the sacred arches of Masjid al Nabawi, gilded lines draw the eye toward a single distant arch. A path of light, leading toward the Prophet, peace be upon him.
