Kiswah
About Ayat ul Kursi - Kufic
The Kiswah is the black cloth that covers the Kaabah in Mecca. It is handcrafted every year using 850 kg of raw silk and over 100 kg of gold and silver threads, and it is embroidered with Qur'anic calligraphy including La ilaha illallah Muhammadur Rasulullah. It is changed on the 9th of Dhul Hijjah each year.
I wanted to paint it to look like tapestry. Thick gold lines run across the canvas and stop in places to reveal the calligraphy, the same words and the same pattern that adorns the cloth itself. It is one of those things that when you see it in person, the scale of it, the craftsmanship and the weight of what it represents.

A tribute to the Kiswah, the magnificent black cloth that covers the Kaaba. This textured painting is crafted to resemble a tapestry, its intricate gold calligraphy reflecting the reverence and awe this sacred object inspires. A celebration of artistry, devotion and the unity of faith.
