Madina
Darwaza
About Darwaza
On the door of Masjid un Nabawi in Madina, there is this motif. I remember standing in front of it and just being completely absorbed by it. The detail, the craftsmanship, the way it seemed to hold so much intention in every line. I could not stop thinking about it.
This painting is my attempt to hold onto that feeling. I built up thick layers of paint on a velvety black canvas, trying to recreate that same sense of texture and depth, the way the gold catches the light and shifts as you move around it. It took a long time to get it right, and I am still not sure I did it justice.
But that is the thing about places like Madina. No matter how hard you try to capture them, they always hold something back. Something that only exists when you are actually there.

On the door of Masjid un Nabawi there is a golden emblem. This painting is a memory of standing before it, tracing the ridges with your eyes, understanding that every detail was placed there with intention.
