Al Aqsa
About Al Aqsa
Masjid Al-Aqsa is the third holiest site in Islam. It is the place from which the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) ascended to the heavens on the Night Journey, and it has been a symbol of Palestinian identity for centuries. It is one of those places that carries so much, historically, spiritually, politically, all at once.
This painting is not trying to document it. I painted it mainly using a palette knife, building up the texture so the dome and minaret feel solid, present. The dome rises from a deep blue, the minaret stands firm beside it, and the first revelation, Surah Alaq, is written into the facade. A reminder that this place is not only sacred history. It is still here. Still standing.
