About Diversity

Diversity is an award-winning painting. It is a celebration of the diversity of the ummah. Thousands of individual brushstrokes, each a different colour, fill the canvas, all surrounding the Kaaba at the centre. Each brushstroke carries its own story and heritage, and yet all are held within the same frame, part of the same community of faith.

The Craft

"I would stand back and see the vastness of the Ummah growing. Every language, every culture, every background. All moving around the same centre."

I painted this on canvas in acrylic, working in bold expressive strokes. Each daub was painted quickly and intuitively. After a handful of colours I would stand back and see the vastness of the Ummah growing. I wanted to paint that feeling of a huge variety of languages, cultures, and backgrounds all moving together around the same centre.

The Centre The Centre The Kaaba sits in solid black at the heart of the painting. Every single daub of colour in the piece orbits this one point. I wanted it to feel still and absolute against all that movement around it.
The Daubs The Daubs Each mark was painted quickly and intuitively, one daub at a time. No two are the same colour. No two are the same size. After a handful I would stand back and see the Ummah growing across the canvas.
The Outer Ring The Outer Ring At the edges the daubs become darker and more densely packed. The colours are still all there but the light has faded. I wanted the painting to feel like it was still expanding, still going, beyond the edge of the canvas.

The Story

"People who look nothing like me, who speak languages I do not understand, and yet we share something fundamental."

I have always been moved by the sheer variety of people I meet at the mosque, at Islamic events, at Hajj. People who look nothing like me, who speak languages I do not understand, who come from places I have never been, and yet with whom I share something fundamental. I wanted to paint that feeling. Not unity as sameness, but unity as recognition. The moment you look at someone very different from yourself and see a brother or a sister.
