About - Al Aqsa
Masjid Al-Aqsa is the third holiest site in Islam, the place from which the Prophet ascended to the heavens on the Night Journey. The dome and the minaret stand firm.
Behind the painting
I used a palette knife for this painting because I wanted it to feel loose, not tight and controlled. I painted the sky with a brush first, building up layers of cobalt and cerulean, then scraped back with the knife while some of the paint was still wet to reveal the layers underneath. The dome is dark, almost black, with green pulling through it.
Masjid Al Aqsa is where our Prophet, peace be upon him, was taken on the Night Journey. For me this mosque is significant not only because it is the third holiest site in Islam, but also because it has been under siege for generations. Just like the Dome of the Rock, this mosque feels like a symbol of resistance for the Palestinians. And I stand firm with them.
