Supernova

About Supernova

I painted this before I went to Umrah. I had not yet seen the Kaabah in person but I kept thinking about what that moment would feel like. That first sight of it. I had heard people describe it, seen photographs, but I wanted to try and paint the feeling I imagined it would give me.

The painting is full of bright colour and energy. thick lines burst outwards from the centre like a supernova, like the core of a sparkler. Hajj is one of the greatest gatherings of people on earth and there is a euphoria to it, a collective intensity that I wanted to get into the painting even before I had experienced it myself.
