About Diversity

My daughter bought me a worktop saver. One of those kitchen ones with colourful squares all over it. And I remember looking at it one day and thinking, that is what Hajj looks like. That is what the Ummah looks like. All these different colours, all these different squares, completely distinct from each other and yet part of the same thing.

That was where this painting started. I took that idea and built it up into something bigger, each dab of colour a different soul, a different country, a different story, all of them converging on the Kaabah at the centre. No faces, no details. Just colour. Because at Hajj, all the things that usually define us, where we are from, what we have, what we look like, none of it matters. You are just one of the colours in the pattern.

I love that it started with something so ordinary. A kitchen worktop saver. Sometimes that is where the best ideas come from.

From every corner of the earth they come. Different languages, different faces, different lives. Yet at the Kaabah, all distinctions fall away. Diversity celebrates the extraordinary breadth of the Ummah and the single point that unites us all.
